‘The Hangover Part II’: Drunkards in a Strange Land

The Wolfpack guys get up to their old substance-abuse-induced hijinks, this time on foreign soil, in this entertaining carbon-copy sequel

Some friends should never go out and drink together, not even abroad. The Hangover Part II, a madcap yet very similar sequel to the surprise comedy hit of 2009, brings together Stu (Ed Helms; Evan Almighty), Phil (Bradley Cooper; Limitless) and Alan (Zack Galifianakis; Due Date) for another disastrous bachelor party.

The Hangover Part II in a Nutshell

Stu the dentist is happy: he finally seems to have forgotten his ex-girlfriend, his stripper ex-wife and the disastrous Las Vegas bachelor party for his friend Doug (Justin Bartha). Lucky Stu is engaged to a beautiful Asian girl (Jamie Chung; Sucker Punch). The wedding is in Thailand, Stu invites his friends, they all get hammered on the beach and wake up, dehydrated and oblivious, in a seedy Bangkok hotel. The missing character this time is Teddy (Mason Lee), the bride’s younger brother. Teddy’s mutilated finger in the hotel room is their only clue. Doug is relegated to telephone support during the search this time around.

Like the original Hangover, the enjoyment of the film rests on the chemistry between the three friends and the energetic Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong; Knocked Up), as well as the public’s tolerance for shameful jokes. Although the plot invokes the classic elements of the best whodunits (just like the first one), the mystery is much simpler: what happened last night?

The Hangover Part II is more of the same, true, but it’s definitely recommended for fans of the original.
